I'm Dan Bahan, a dedicated citizen running for city council, committed to bringing positive change to our community.
Together, we can create a city that works for all, prioritizing equality, justice, and the well-being of its residents.
I believe in transparency, community engagement, and leveraging over a decade of IT experience to get to the root of problems. I am a strong supporter of unions and public schools.
First and foremost I’m not a real estate developer. I have no personal profit motive behind any of my politics.
My connection to Cedar Rapids runs deep. My family moved here when I was 5 years old, and this city has been my home ever since. I came up through our public school system, experiencing firsthand the importance of quality education for every child in our community.
Right after graduating, I rolled up my sleeves to help clean up from the devastating 2008 flood that affected so many of our neighbors. That experience ignited my passion for community service and the realization that working together, we can overcome any challenge that comes our way.
For the past 15 years, I've had the privilege of serving as a martial arts instructor, empowering our youth with discipline, self confidence, and respect. Through this role, I've witnessed the transformative power of investing in our young people's growth and well-being.
As a city council member, I will prioritize investing in our youth programs, ensuring that every child has access to educational, recreational, and cultural opportunities. I believe that by nurturing and supporting our young citizens, we can build a stronger and more vibrant community for generations to come.
Potholes Over Politics: Our roads and infrastructure are vital to every resident, regardless of their political beliefs. Potholes and road conditions don’t discriminate – they affect all of us. I’m committed to putting our community’s needs first by prioritizing road repairs and investing in our infrastructure. Safe and smooth roads are a basic necessity, and I’m determined to ensure that our streets don’t care about your political affiliation, but they do ensure a smoother ride for everyone.
Don’t Close Our Schools: Our children’s education should be a top priority. It’s concerning to see valuable resources being diverted towards new projects while our neighborhood schools are in need of repairs and improvements. I stand against the unnecessary redirection of $180 million away from our children’s education. Let’s invest in our existing schools and ensure that every child has access to a quality education in their own community.
Neighborhoods: Creating walkable neighborhoods is essential for the well being of our residents and the vibrancy of our city. I am committed to designing and improving our urban spaces to prioritize pedestrians and cyclists, making it easier for everyone to move around safely without relying solely on cars. Walkable neighborhoods promote health, reduce traffic congestion, and foster a strong sense of community. Let’s work together to make our city a place where people can stroll, bike, and connect with their surroundings.
Engagement: Through volunteering and participating in local events, I have been working hard to understand the concerns of our many residents. Recently through my martial arts school we put on a fundraiser for Chains Interrupted. We raised over six thousand dollars to help with their programs to fight human trafficking.
Listening to the Community: As your city council member, I will hold regular town hall meetings, at times you can attend, in order to listen to your voices, ensuring that your needs and desires shape our decisions.
I am committed to transparency and will involve the public in decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard.
I will utilize my IT expertise to make data-driven decisions on infrastructure development, prioritizing projects that enhance our city's livability.
By supporting small and local businesses and investing in workforce development programs, we can foster economic growth that benefits everyone. Let’s keep money in our community!
I will fight for better public transportation options, advocating for improved routes, more frequent services, and increased accessibility. Additionally, I will work to secure later bus hours to accommodate the needs of second and third shift workers, ensuring that everyone can access reliable and affordable transportation options regardless of their work schedules.
